What are the benefits of waxing?
Besides your skin feeling more smooth and less hairy, there are many benefits to waxing. A few of these benefits include feeling less itching and prickliness after body hair removal, less likely to get ingrown hairs, and helping avoid risks of razor cuts. In addition to these, one of the best benefits of waxing is that it results in less regrowth of the hair – if done consistently. The reason why regrowth is slower after waxing is because waxing removes the hair from the root, thus delaying the time for the ripped hair follicle to grow back! On the other hand, when you shave with a razor, you are only removing the hair shaft that is present on the skin’s surface, therefore the hair grows back much faster than it would if you waxed.
It is important to note that waxing does not stop hair growth completely, the hair will still eventually regrow after around 3 – 4 weeks. However, after several waxing appointments, the hair will grow back gradually thinner and scarcer. Since waxing removes the hair from the root, the hair follicle gets weaker over time, thus resulting in the production of finer hair.
Finally, another benefit of waxing is that it indirectly provides your skin with a gentle exfoliation. The skin is covered in dead skin cells, oils, and dirt which results in outbreaks and dry skin. While waxing, this layer of unwanted dirt, oils, and dead skin cells is removed. This is why your skin feels smoother, fresher, and more radiant after a waxing session. With that being said, please remember that this does not count as a primary method of exfoliating your skin.
How do I prepare for my waxing session?
- GROW YOUR HAIR OUT
If you do not grow your hair out then the wax will not have anything to latch onto and remove. If your hair is too short, the wax will stick to your skin rather than your hair, thus preventing the expected flawless results. We recommend growing your hair to about a quarter of an inch or approximately the size of a rice grain before your waxing session.
We advise all our clients to moisturize a day before the waxing session. However, if you are getting any part of your face waxed it is important to be cautious of your skincare. If you use serums and treatments for your face, you need to keep an eye out for certain ingredients like alpha-hydroxy acids and retinol, as they tend to make your skin more sensitive. It is advised to avoid them for a week preceding your session. If you are on any medication such as Accutane, please let us know before your waxing session so we can advise you properly on what to do.
- EXFOLIATE YOUR SKIN
It is important to exfoliate your body before your waxing session. Your body is covered with dead skin cells which makes it harder for the hair to penetrate through the skin, thus leading to a higher chance of growing many ingrown hairs. Exfoliating the skin before an appointment – and regularly – helps prevent this, making the waxing session much quicker and easier. We recommend exfoliating a day or two before your waxing session to receive excellent results.
- AVOID LONG EXPOSURE TO THE SUN
Staying in the sun is not good for your skin, especially before a wax appointment. Your skin can become more sensitive after long exposure to the sun due to sunburns. The skin will become extremely sensitive and we cannot wax over it. This is why we highly recommend using SPF on your body or avoiding staying in the sun for a long period of time for a week before your wax appointment.
- DO NOT BE SHY OR SELF – CONSCIOUS
There is nothing to be embarrassed or worried about! We are professionals and have done this thousands of times and have been providing waxing services in Ferndale for a while! Our main goal is to satisfy you and help you leave with smoother skin and a wider smiler!
What do I do after my waxing session?
Post-depilatories are great for removing any waxy residue, relaxing and comforting the skin after the wax session, and helping prevent red bumps and ingrown hairs. These types of lotions are the best for waxing aftercare and are highly recommended!
- APPLY A COLD COMPRESS
This will help relax red skin and moderate the red bumps that may appear after waxing. In addition, using a cold compress can help reduce inflammation of the skin, therefore decreasing the chance of getting an infection.
- USE COOL GELS ON YOUR SKIN
Cool gels such as Aloe Vera are great for soothing your recently waxed skin. We recommend using them consistently for a few days after your session to protect and rejuvenate the skin.
- WEAR LOOSE CLOTHING
Wearing loose clothing after a waxing session is important as it allows your skin to breathe, prevents irritation and infections, and feels better on your freshly waxed skin. Tight clothes may lead to sweating and friction which may cause annoyance and harm to your skin.
It is important to exfoliate around two to three days after your waxing session. By this point, your skin would have recovered and is ready to be moisturized.
